I have been making my own polishing pads for nearly two years now and am now looking into making standard loop backed pads. The main difference between my pads and what is commonly available is mine are designed specifically for each stone type and have the maximum amount of abrasive that I can get away with. For granite or other similarly hard materials such as quartz surfaces, glass, or porcelain tiles I use diamond and for marble or other soft stones I use either silicon carbide or aluminum oxide powder. Because of this I find that my pads work around two to four times faster. I currently have a few molds for 2mm thick 4 inch pads that I have been playing with. Here is a photo of one of my silicon carbide pads. As more information is available I will post it here but since it is a side project to our switchplate business progress is sometimes rather slow.
